I don't know where to begin with this. I'm just so frazzled.
I have always had a strong work ethic. I always work twice as hard. This has rewarded me in many ways. With being a quick learner and my WANTING to learn, I have been to many different departments in my years of working. My current job is no different. I have expressed interest in learning night audit, in learning how to properly check a room, and learning parts of the bistro.
This is why it baffles me when people at my job call off so much.
Yesterday was a horrible day. My co worker showed up to work an hour and a half late. He took an hour long lunch. He kept disappearing to go to different areas of the hotel. This would not be bad if it weren't for the fact that we had over 100 check ins today. Along with that the phone was ringing off the hook. When I say off the hook, I mean OFF. THE. HOOK. Every single time I hung up the phone with a guest, the phone would ring not even 5 seconds later. I needed the help and all day I felt like I was alone. It was one of the worst feelings in the world. This is the same co worker who decides it's a great idea to post a Facebook picture of him lighting up (smoking weed) and then coming in to work a few minutes later, still high.
Today was a better day, but still not by much. We had 50-some check ins today so not as many as the other night. However, there was still lots of work that needed to be done. My co worker (the same one from yesterday) kept disappearing once more, taking bathroom breaks all the time, or was on Facebook or on his phone. I will admit, I go on Facebook and will text on my phone as well, but I always know when to cut it out to help a guest.
At the end of the night, I was asked to restock the market. My co worker was with me at the desk at the time. He ended up disappearing. I came back from restocking to market to find a line of guests ready to check in (at 10:30 PM) and the phones ringing off the hook. My co worker nowhere to be found. I find out later he was in the back office BS-ing with our van driver.
Another co worker has either been calling off for bullshit reasons, or showing up to work late or asking to leave early. She goes out and parties all night long and comes in either hung over or drunk still. This is all based on things I have heard. At least a couple times a week I am asked to come in early or stay late because 1 or both of these co workers will call off.
There are many times when I want to call off work. Absolutely. The other day I was feeling sick and I almost did. However I have seen the managers scramble to find people and I know it can't always be done. I would feel awful. I guess I just don't understand how others feel it's okay to call off once or twice a week.
I feel like I am due to have a mental breakdown. I can't continue picking up the slack for my co workers. The only reasons management hasn't said anything is because we need the people at the front desk. We have been looking to hire a front desk person for quite some time. NOBODY wants to work front desk. They all want to work house keeping because in a way, it is easier. It just baffles me that people have this kind of work ethic and don't give a shit about their other co workers.
